Fingerstyle-guitar-techniques covers a lot of ground. The core issue is making your fingers go where your brain tells them to.

Developing good fingerstyle-guitar-techniques is at the very heart of learning to play fingerstyle guitar. The most crucial aspect of developing good technique is training your fingers to go where your brain tells them to.

For starters, let's make sure that we're on the same page as far as which finger is which. Except for the thumb we'll use a numerical system. The thumb will be called T-the pointer finger 1- the middle finger 2- the ring finger 3 and the little finger is 4.

We'll refer to the right hand as the picking hand and the left hand as the fretting hand. If you're a lefty just reverse the hands.

Now let's make sure that we all agree on which guitar string is which. On a 6 string guitar the highest number string (the 6th) refers to the largest string on the guitar. The smallest string (the 1st) is given the smallest number, 1.

So if you're supposed to put your right hand thumb on the 6th string, all you have to do is place your thumb on the fattest string. It's just that simple. I've come up with a series of right hand exercises that will help with developing good fingerstyle-guitar-techniques.

When you've gotten to the point where you can control your picking hand you'll be able to start doing some really cool techniques.

One of my all time favorites is artificial harmonics. Developing techniques like artificial harmonics, walking bass lines, learning guitar chord construction, and the thumbstyle playing of Chet Atkins give texture to your playing and keeps it from becoming boring to both you and the listener. It will also allow you to learn fingerstyle-guitar-techniques like fingerstyle Travis picking and fingerstyle slide guitar. Let's get in tune before we start working on these techniques. Here’s an on-line guitar tuner.

Now lets's get those fingers moving and our fingerstyle guitar technique happening.
