Finger-Style now, or later?

by Stephen
(South TX)

I am 37 and just now learning the guitar. I don't ever intend to be a performing artist, I just want to play for myself and sometimes friends and family. Ultimately I really like both finger-style and classical guitar, but I am somewhat impatient. Should I start with "standard" guitar, like Jamorama.com, until I am comfortable with the instrument, or go straight to finger-style?

I'd be happy with e-mail response, or an answer here.

Thanks

Pick or Fingers?
by: Jim

My take on it is that it's better to pursue what you're most interested in. In my opinion, being interested in something keeps you doing it.

For the vast majority of people, repetition makes you better. Especially if you learn the most efficient way to perform the task from the beginning.

It also depends on which feels most natural to you. For some people fingerpicking seems "right", for others, playing with a pick does.

I hope this helps. Maybe some other folks will chime in.
